The Institute of Biomedicine, University of Gothenburg, houses a number of strong research groups that investigate different aspects of mitochondrial biology and the role of mitochondria in human disease. To this dynamic research environment we now recruit a new member.
Mitochondrial gene expression.
Subject area description
Mitochondria contain their own genome that codes for several subunits of the respiratory chain. The expression of this genome is carefully regulated and mutation that disturb the function of this system can lead to a number human diseases. We, in our lab, study mitochondrial DNA gene expression and how mutations affecting the transcription machinery cause disease.
With this project the candidate will study how the mitochondrial genome is expressed in human cells. The project mainly involves work with purified proteins and in vitro experiments, but the group also uses cell biology techniques.
An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
The ideal candidate will have experience in biochemistry and in vitro analyses of protein function. Moreover, experience in cloning, mutagenesis, protein expression and purification, mammalian cell culture, imaging techniques, handling radiolabeled isotopes, in vitro transcription and knowledge of mitochondrial systems are of merit. The work involves collaboration within and outside the group, therefore good teamwork skills are important. The project requires an enthusiastic and creative person with a passion and curiosity for science. Good knowledge in English language is required as the lab hosts a very international environment.Good subject knowledge in a relevant discipline is of merit.
