Sahlgrenska Academy, Institute of Biomedicine, Department Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Mucin Biologiy Groups are recruiting a scientist and laboratory manager. The groups use English as the main language of communication and a good knowledge of spoken and written English is an absolute requirement, as well as very good knowledge of Swedish. The Mucin Biology research groups currently comprise about 25 researchers with some 30 more in collaborative groups, see also

All the body's mucosal surfaces are protected by mucus layer. These mucus layers are different in different parts of the body and have mucins as main component. This includes both intestinal and respiratory tract, and fluids secreted by the liver and pancreas. The position requires good knowledge of all the methods used in the groups. This includes, but is not limited to: plasmid work, PCR, cell culture, establishing of stem cell cultures from intestine and lungs, bacterial work, histology, immunoassays, and microscopy. 

Job assignments

Performing project financed by Gates Foundation including to establish and maintenance of stem cell spheroid cultures from the intestine. Screening of substance libraries for effect on mucin production at a middle-sized level. Screening in 96-well format and readouts using automatic microscope. Processing of data. Maintenance of cell culture facility.


PhD exam in a relevant area. Good experience in working with mucins and stem cells and associated methods for work with mucins. Special emphasis is on the special techniques necessary for work on mucins and their specific problems and modifications by glycans. Emphasis is on the ability to interact with others within the group. Good administrative capacity. Fluency in English is a prerequisite and knowledge in Swedish is required.


The employment is a full time permanent position placed at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment: April 1st 2019. Probationary employment could be applied.
